We've fielded a ton of questions about the DSR-100, and I would say the number 1 question is, "320x240 doesn't sound like that great of video?" Our answer, you're right...
VIDEO QUALITY:
The video quality is very average, and below average when compared to an actual video camera. Because it uses a SD card, and captures the video digitally, it's at a slight disadvantage. The video is compressed, and won't have the same crisp image of a uncommpressed solution. Using a DVR recorder does have some downsides, but there are also a bunch of advantages.
- Using a card, instead of tape eliminates much of the "shock" distortion. There are no recording heads that can vibrate.
- Size. Simply most video cameras are larger. We've used other models that allowed us to attach a bullet camera to a standard video camera, but wires and bulk was always an issue. There really isn't a way to get around this unless you use a DVR.
- Mounting options are easier to create. If you do use your video camera with a mount (such as on the tank) you're limited to where you can mount the camera.
- The DVR systems are designed for a single purpose, to use a bullet camera. If you buy another system that uses your video camera, most likely the connection will be a plug on the side. These plugs are not very rugged, and if bent, can ruin the camera.
- Sharing video is easier, and less time consuming. While some will want to store their rides on a DVD, we've found that most want to share them with friends over email. With the DSR-100 it's as easy as attaching it to your computer. Most video cameras require you to render the video into a video software program, then save it to a compressed format. In the end, video quality takes a hit.
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER A DVR SYSTEM?
If you're main purpose requires a high quality video picture, run away. These units are not designed for that purpose. Lets face it, with all the HD video solutions out there, we've come to expect almost 3D picture quality. But we remind our customers that this is a complete system for just over $300. If you expect more, then be prepared to spend more.
If you want a system that allows you to capture your rides so you can share them with friends on your computer, TV, or over the Internet, then these units are a great option. Will the picture be crystal clear on your TV? No, but the final product isn't that bad. Everyone will enjoy the experience. If you aren't expecting a HD quality outcome, and understand the limitations, you should be happy.
NOTE: Below is a YouTube video uploaded in .mpg format. Keep in mind, much of how the video appears is based on how big you want the file to be. We used a high compression rate so it would easily upload onto the YouTube servers. Your video my be smaller, or shorter in length, and not need a high compression format. This video is over 6 minutes long, and was 31mg after compression. Less compression, better video image.
