 HELMET WEIGHT
"How much does this helmet weigh???" We hear this question everyday in our store.
If you've been around a while, you probably have an old helmet that feels like it weighs 10lbs. Helmets used to be a lot heavier than the current models available. Advancements in technology have allowed helmet manufacturers to create and build safer helmets, while at the same time making them much lighter and comfortable.
According to our scale, most of the new helmets are lighter than previous models. Not only are they lighter, many are designed so they "feel" even lighter while on your head. This is accomplished with helmet design (putting the weight lower), and of course, better aerodynamic engineering. While weight is important, it isn’t "always" just about the actual poundage. You’ll notice companies like Shoei, Arai, Shark and Suomy manufacture most of the "super" lightweight helmets. This is mainly attributed to these manufacturers having a strong focus on racing, and choose to use more exotic materials for the shell, styrene and padding.
IMPORTANT
Many helmet manufacturers list their helmets weight in catalogs, or online so you get an idea of what it weighs before purchasing. However, most of the time, we've found that these weights are not 100% accurate. Some weigh their helmets without cheek pads or liners installed in the helmet and we feel this is a little misleading.
We've created the extensive chart below showing each helmet’s actual weight. We carefully weighed each model on our US Postal meters, "as you would wear it."
