The HJC CL-14 was known as the best selling helmet in the United States. Well the HJC CL-15 has arrived and it has made many improvements over the CL-14 which should help it claim that title once again. The CL-15 boasts many high-end features typically only found in helmets twice its price and overall we feel HJC has done a great job with the CL-15.
The CL-15 has a fully-removable liner which allows for easy cleaning as well as custom fitting. The liner has two separate components: The top comfort liner and the cheek pads. The liners can be purchased at low price to customize the fit or simply make the helmet feel and smell new again. The helmet fits similar to the slightly more expensive CL-SP and both are describes as moderately round. Most riders are able to get a good fit from the CL-15. One thing our testers reported was needing to "bump" down a size on the CL-15 from what they normally wore. The CL-15 tends to run about one size large.
The venting on the CL-15 is fairly average in general, but it does do better than many models in it's own price range. Our testers didn't have any major issues with the CL-15, but on a really hot day one tester commented it didn't perform quite as well as the ultra-high-dollar models. We still think the HL-15 does a great job for the price and unless you ride in the hot desert, you'll likely never have any issues either.
The CL-15 does well in the noise department. We didn't have any complaints with excessive noise levels until we hit triple digits. This is normal for any helmet at high speeds and nothing a pair of ear filters won't fix. The visor seals nicely and this helps keep the helmet sound levels in check.
The best feature of the CL-15 is the new HJC visor design. It is one of the best designs making it incredibly simple to change visors. It might even be easier to change shields than Shoei's system. Open the visor, press lightly on the curved lever and the visor pops right off. Re-installing is even easier. Just line the tabs up and lightly press the visor down and it magically pops right into place. It is so simple you can do it with your eyes closed. HJC also includes a locking mechanism on the visor to keep it locked down that works very well.
The CL-15 uses HJC's newest HJ-09 visor that comes anti-fog treated. There are 16 different choices when it comes to visors. Anything from clear, tinted, mirrored, race-posts, etc. And the visors are all reasonably priced just like the helmet. There are plenty of visors to give your helmet the look you desire.
The CL-15 is a great helmet and our testers all had good things to say about it's performance. It has all the features we look for in a helmet and the best part is that the price. It wasn't all that long ago that it would have cost $400 to get a helmet with these features.
