Many of AGV's full face models tend to be marketed towards the race paddock, but the S-4 is one of the first helmets aimed towards the street and cruiser segment. It's a nice helmet that does a great job in providing protection, comfort, and features at an affordable price.
The ventilation of the S-4 is above average. Everyone of our testers who evaluated the S-4 felt is provided adequate cooling. The general consensus was it performed almost as well as the AGV Stealth. There are several front air intakes to introduce fresh air for cooling and that air is extracted via the rear vent panels.
The fit of the S-4 is similar to the Stealth. It falls in the middle of the fit spectrum and that allows most riders to get a good fit with this model. None of our testers had any complaints regarding fit of the S-4. The padding is plenty soft and forms nicely to the contour of your face.
The S-4's liner is fully removable. This allows easy cleaning and custom fitting. The S-4 liner also features a hygenic treatment to the liner. We can't say we can feel or see any difference, but we'll take AGV's word for it. Anything to keep the funk to a minimum is a good thing by our standards. You'll notice there are liner and padding accessories available for the S-4. This easily allows the fit of the helmet to be adjusted by popping new padding in the shell. It also allows to make the helmet feel brand new again.
The noise levels in the helmet were good. The S-4 vents well, but the design of the air intakes seem to help keep the helmet fairly quiet. We still prefer to wear earplugs when riding any helmet, but the S-4 did seem to be less noisy than other AGV models we have tested. We did not experience any whistle or low frequency problems in our testing.
The visor system also earns high marks. There are basically no moving parts in the system and that will help keep things easy. The visor is a snap to change. Open the visor to the open position, press gently on the release tab and apply slightly more pressure in the upward directions and the visor comes right off. It is one of the easiest systems in use today and we like it.
The S-4 is DOT and BSI 6658 certified so you know you are getting a safe helmet.
Overall, we liked the AGV S-4. It performed well in out tests and has many features for a good price. If you are looking for a quality Italian helmet and don't want to break the bank, the AGV S-4 is worth looking into.
