Suomy Spec.1R Evaluation
When it comes to how a helmet performs, you need to put it through it's paces. Kyle Scott, one of our Helmet Harbor Race Team riders, and employee's, decided after his last "Incident" to give the Suomy Spec.1R a shot. He couldn't be happier.
After Kyle was given the helmet, his first impressions were luke-warm. He was impressed with the helmets fit and finish, but for some reason he expected more. Remember, Kyle had been wearing an Arai, and it had saved him from injury in his last "crash test." The weight, or lack of it, also impressed him. He was excited to get on the track and see how everything came together under some extreme conditions.
A local "Test & Tune" was the perfect opprotunity to get the helmet up to speed, and see if the Spec.1R was everything Suomy had stated. After the first on track session, the answer was easy to see. This helmet lives up to the hype.
The lack of weight was very apparent on the track, and Kyle describes it as one of the lightest helmets he has ever worn. He also advised the Spec.1R never made contact with his leather suit as he moved his head from side to side. This has been a issue on many other helmet brands.
The venting was described as "incredible". In the morning sessions the helmet moved so much air, his head become cold. After only a few laps, Kyle explained, the venting helped keep him fresh and focused, and the chill had long been left behind.
Comfort was outstanding, and Kyle advised his oval shaped head fit well in his medium helmet. He had been restricted to oval shaped helmets such as the Arai Signet GT, but again, fit was not an issue. He reported zero hot spots, and rated overall comfort a 9 out of 10. (By the way, he ranked the Signet below a 9 score).
In conclusion, Kyle ranked the Suomy Spec.1R as one of the best helmets on the market.
